The Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ambalavayal, Kerala Agricultural University, is the main centre of research representing the high range zone for improvement of horticultural crops in the state. Farmers from various parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh visit/contact the station for technical guidance and advice on various aspects of hi-tech agriculture and commercial horticulture. The Research Station coordinates and provides research support to agricultural production activities in the High Range zone (Wayanad and Idukki districts, parts of Kozhikkode and Nelliyampathy area of Palakkad district). Its activities are therefore extensive and multi-pronged. The centre can provide total technology solutions for the commercial production of spices, subtropical fruits, cool season vegetables, flower crops and spices. It can also provide backup support for farming through the production of quality planting materials and other inputs. The station has to shoulder the responsibility of solving the agrarian crisis of the high ranges and Wayanad in particular through its technological intervention for ensuring sustainable income to the farmers through farmer participatory programmes including capacity building.
